It's time for another contest. Actually, this is the start of monthly Pickle Pie Designs photo contests. It's been a while so we thought we'd start off with a nice, big prize; a $50 Pickle Pie Designs Gift Certificate! Five random entrants will each receive a $5 Pickle Pie Designs Gift Certificate.

To enter, please post a photo of your Pickle Pie Designs creation on our Facebook page by January 31. Enter as many photos as you'd like to increase your odds of winning! Winners will be chosen and announced on our Facebook page on February 1.

Pickle Pie Designs is an exhibitor at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Chantilly, VA, September 29 - October 1. We're so excited for the opportunity to meet many of our customers and gain a few new ones, too! Our designs have been made into Embroidery Design Collections on CD and will be available at our booth, along with Perfectly Coordinated Supply Kits to make the finished projects on our CDs!

To make Valentine Lollipop Covers:

Buy some cute heart-shaped lollipops - I found mine at my local Walgreens drugstore.

Stitch out one of the Monogrammed Heart Hair Pretties from our set, following the stitching directions included with the designs. (The "Be Mine" heart shown in the photo is included in the set!)

Turn your Hair Pretties design over to the back. Using small scissors or a seam ripper, cut 2 horizontal slits in the back layer of felt, near the bottom of the heart. The slits should be spaced about 1/4" apart. Cut them just wide enough to slide the lollipop stick through.

Slide your lollipop stick through both slits, threading it through until it won't go any further.

Turn the heart over to the front to see how cute your Valentine Lollipop Cover turned out! Stitch up a bunch for school Valentines or as special treats for your little loves!

My Little Cub Scout

Last night was the annual Cub Scouts Bake-Off in my son's troop where each scout makes a baked good with a parent and brings them to the pack meeting for judging. Since Thomas is a Bear Cub, we were assigned to make a cake. We decided on a favorite of ours; Cake Pops! We decorated them to look like Lego characters and they turned out really cute! And they were a HUGE hit with the Scouts!

The best part of the night (even better than sampling all of the treats at the meeting) was that Thomas won for the Most Creative cake! Hurray to Thomas!! Here's his "trophy".... ;-)

I stumbled upon the cutest Alexander Henry Halloween fabric at my local fabric shop. Like most (if not all) of my customers, I am a fabric addict so I couldn't resist buying a couple of yards and making myself a fun Halloween skirt. And how could I resist digitizing a design to make a coordinating top?! Well, I couldn't, and that's how my "Witchy Woman Applique" came about! And then of course I couldn't resist making a hair pretty to match the applique.... I should have both designs ready in the next week so stay tuned! Sewing Mishap Winner!

A few months ago I was testing an in-the-hoop design on my embroidery machine. In the interest of saving a bit of time, I ignored my own instructions and, instead of taping down fabric to my stabilizer, I held it in place with my fingers as my embroidery machine did the stitching. (Can you guess where I'm going with this story??) That's right...before I knew what was happening, my finger got caught under the presser foot and the needle stitched right through my finger! (If you have a weak stomach, stop reading now....) My finger was caught in there until the needle broke. The broken needle stayed in my finger and I even had a long length of thread in my finger, and it was still attached to the machine. Eek! I panicked and pulled it out by the needle point, not thinking to cut the thread first and pulled a couple of feet of thread through my finger before thinking to cut it off the spool. I still cringe thinking about that. I headed to the doctor for a tetanus shot and an x-ray which showed a piece of the needle stuck inside. Luckily they gave it a few days to work itself out before doing anything, and that did the trick. But ICK! As you can imagine, I'm much more careful these days (even though I still do take shortcuts sometimes...)

I'm so impressed that my wonderful readers guessed my newest design! I had so much fun designing the Boutique Fanny Pack and Zipper Case set and I hope you like it! I made myself a Boutique Fanny Pack before our trip to Disney World last week and was able to give it a rigorous test drive! I'm happy to report that it not only held up well but it was the best looking Fanny Pack in the World, if I do say so myself. I used the 6x10 size to make my fanny pack and it held my iPhone, which has a chunky case, my camera, and the wallet shown in the photos. It held up really well and was so incredibly useful! It was great having everything I needed safe and in easy reach. And I was glad not to have to wear one of those ugly black fanny packs! I also made fanny packs for my kids. I used Disney character fabrics (Mickey Mouse for my little boy and The Little Mermaid for my little girl) and left of the ribbon and initial on the front of the pack so the character fabrics would be the focal point. I used the 5x7 size for theirs. They adored them, although my son wished he had a big one like mine!

My family just returned from our celebration trip to Disney! I wanted to share some photos with you and also give you a sneak peek at my newest design which will be released this week! I LOVE my newest In the Hoop design and I think you will, too! I originally designed Peekaboo Zipper Cases to hold toiletries and other essentials for my family's upcoming Disney trip but they're useful for so many things! I filled one with bandages and Neosporin to keep in my purse for all of those boo-boos that happen to my kids while we're out on walks or at the park. I also think they'd be great for stashing supplies for a sewing class. I used Disney fabrics to make toothbrush/toothpaste cases for my kids for our trip and I also made a 6x10 version for my husband! I've received many requests for a Ladybug Hair Pretties design and I've also had a few requests to offer my Hair Pretties designs in a smaller size so they can be worn by tiny little girls. So I present to you my new Ladybug Hair Pretties set which comes with 2 sizes for the same price! The ladybug is sized in line with all of my other Hair Pretties designs which are made to be used with the standard, widely-avaible alligator clip size. The smaller bug (called a Baby Bug!) is perfect for smaller snap clips and is also cute glued or stitched onto a hair bow or headband.

I adorned this plain, red headband by glueing on baby ric rac with E-6000 glue. I then glued on the smaller Babybug Hair Pretties design:

NEW 5x7 Crayon Roll!

I've had lots of requests for a Crayon Roll to fit in the 5x7 hoop and here it is! This nifty little bundle holds 7 crayons and rolls up nice and small to fit in a mom's purse for those times when you need quick entertainment for your little one... doctor's offices, restaurants, etc. And the best part is that little hands can roll it up and close it without Mom's help, since there's a velcro closure! Kids LOVE to be able to do things independently and they'll love cleaning up after themselves when they see how much fun it is, LOL! The closure is made using Velcro Fabric Fusion which is such a fun product. Using a hot iron, you adhere the Velcro to the grosgrain ribbon strap. You also have the option of making a simple ribbon tie with this design, if you'd rather not have a Velcro closure. Directions are included for both.

Personalize your Crayon Rolls for a fun touch. Tuck a Crayon Roll in a gift bag with a coloring book and you have a great birthday gift every child will adore!

The Cat in the Hat!

My 7 year old informed my on Wednesday evening that he wanted to be The Cat in the Hat for "Dress as your Favorite Book Character" day at school on Friday. So I had Thursday to buy supplies and come up with a costume. Yikes! I ran to Joann's and picked up a half yard of both red and white felt, then shopped all over town for a black sweatsuit (hard to find in North Carolina in March!) then went home and called my husband to tell him I was going to wing it and hope for the best. I wasn't quite sure how I would make the hat, but my husband, a master Googler, got right on the case and found a great pattern for a Cat in the Hat hat. The hat was really fun to make and turned out great! For the cat's body, I stitched a white Minky belly to the black sweatshirt, then made a simple red bow. My son loved the results and he looked just adorable!

These little guys are so cute I get a big smile every time I look at them! I designed them with both girls AND boys in mind since I thought it would be fun to make them into not only Hair Pretties but also Easter pencil toppers. I stitched one in blue and attached a blue bow tie and I think it's perfect for a boy! And I found some really fun glittery pastel pencils in Target's Dollar Spot that were perfect to use with the Funny Bunnies! I have a fun matching applique on the way very soon. And maybe a softie - what do you think?!

A HUGE reason for my family to celebrate!

Disney World, here we come! After seven years of wearing an eye patch daily, several surgeries, and countless trips to Duke University Eye Center, our battle to save the vision in our son's right eye is coming to a close.

Our first baby, Thomas, was born with a birth defect in his eye. We had no idea until he was 6 months old and I started to notice that his eye would drift out once in a while. I took him to our pediatrician and was sent straight to Duke University Eye Center, a world-class facility which we are lucky enough to live 20 miles from. We were also lucky to have access to Dr. William Buckley, a leader in his field. Dr. Buckley found a cataract in Thomas's eye, caused by a hole in the lens. This is a one in a million occurrence. He scheduled surgery for a few days later since the risk of Thomas losing his vision quickly was so high. He told us it would be a long road to recovery with several years of treatment. It was heartbreaking for us to hear and the long road to recovery proved to be challenging, heart-wrenching, and, at times, just plain awful. I honestly don't know how I did it. There were days when I wanted to give up since it was so hard but I knew my son's vision depended on me and I refused to let him down. When Thomas was two, and we were at the worst of the "Patch Wars" as we referred to them, I told my husband that the day Thomas was done patching was the day I was booking a family trip to Disney to celebrate!

And here we are today... Thomas's vision has improved so much from his years of patching that his ophthalmologist has declared that we can stop patching. This is a HUGE victory for us! We may have to go back to temporary patching at some point, and he may have other surgeries ahead, but we'll take what we can get. And, gosh darn it, my kid is getting his Disney trip!!

Thomas will have to wear bifocal glasses for life since the artificial lens implanted in his eye doesn't focus and Thomas does not see well out of the eye without the glasses. With glasses, he can see 20/30 which is a huge improvement over the 20/1200 visual acuity he started with! Thomas has been wearing glasses since he was 8 months old so they're second nature to him. (Did I mention how challenging it is to keep glasses on a baby? They were his favorite chew toy!)

This is Thomas at eight months old with his tiny bifocal glasses. This photos melts me!

Here is Thomas at nine months wearing an eye patch over his good eye which forced his brain to use his weak eye, otherwise he would go blind. I had to rotate the patch every day since the adhesive was really irritating to his skin, and the patch would tear his delicate skin when removed. I had to keep Thomas distracted at all times or that patch would be pulled off in a flash by the little rascal!

And here he is at age 7, three days after his latest eye surgery. Isn't he handsome?!

Our fast and easy in-the-hoop Zippered Coin Wallet and iPhone Wristlet Case designs are so fast and easy to make, and they are really versatile! My friend, Pam, told me she made herself a Zippered Coin Wallet to use in her handbag to carry her sweetener packets. Apparently those little bad-boys can break open in your purse and make a real mess! I don't use sweetener (I'm a real sugar kind of gal) but I thought it was a fabulous idea! My stepmom uses sweeteners so I just had to make one for her. I also thought they'd be cute for holding my Lactaid packets since I always carry a stash of them in my purse. My newest design is a darling little Zippered Coin Purse. It is a great size to tuck in a pocket or small purse and it is perfectly sized for children! It's a fast and easy project that is made completely in the hoop of your embroidery machine - zipper and all! And don't let the zipper scare you - I promise it is easy! The front of the wallet is made with vinyl so you can see what's inside and it's a super way to showcase fun fabrics. There's even a little pocket on the back to tuck in a card. Name My Newest Hair Pretties Design and Win!

My little girl turns 4 tomorrow! We had a birthday celebration today with two of her little girlfriends and painted their nails, had gooey chocolate cake and played fairy dress-up! Each little girl received a goody bag with my newest Hair Pretties design attached and they were a hit! The Hair Pretties design is a little purse with a ribbon handle. They're fast and easy and really very sweet!

I hope to release this design over the next few days, I just can't decide on a name for it. "Purse Hair Pretties" just doesn't seem to have a nice ring to it. I have a lot of creative customers so I thought I'd make it fun and let you decide! Wristlet Cases for iPhone and iTouch!

I'm really excited to introduce my long-awaited In-the-Hoop iPhone Case! It's actually pretty nifty since it uses clear vinyl for the front of the case and you can use your iPhone or iTouch without removing it from the case! I have to give my smart hubby credit for that awesome idea. I made a prototype this week and carried it around for a couple of days before realizing I really needed a strap for my wrist. I made another last night with a strap and am loving it! It has a zipper so your iPhone won't fall out, a pocket in the back to store head phones, and, in addition to the wrist strap, it has a loop so you can attach a key ring or lobster clasp. The Wristlet Case for iPhones is really fast to make and the zipper is so easy to attach in-the-hoop that you'll be amazed!

I stitched along each side to close. Then I simply slide the pillow form into the envelope opening, hand stitched on a quick bow and Voila! I think I'm going to make a bunch of these for Christmas gifts since they were so quick and easy!

This is such a fun time of year, even more so if you are an embroiderer! It's so nice to be able to stitch fun and unique gifts for family and friends, and to make a few goodies for ourselves!

Make Your Own Korker Ribbon!

My wonderful customer, Lynn Petrucci, sent in this tutorial for making your own Korker Ribbon! It looks like so much fun and I can't wait to give it a try. Thanks for sharing this fun craft, Lynn!

Here are the basic korker supplies:

- 1/4 or 1/8" ribbon

- 1/4" wooden dowels, cut 18" or shorter to fit in the oven.

- Wooden clothespins.

Step 1: Wind the ribbon around the dowels close but not overlapping and clip ends with the clothespins.

Step 2: Spray with water bottle or lightly run under the faucet. Let the excess water drip off while the oven is preheating.

Place loaded dowels onto the cookie sheet and bake at 275 degrees for 20 min. Set your timer. After the 20 min. turn the oven off and leave the corker dowels in the oven to cool down approx. 30 min.

Step 4: After the ribbons have cooled down, unwind and see the MAGIC. Now you are ready to korker everything in site. Have fun!

I haven't posted in a while. And for good reason. We had a major leak in our downstairs bathroom which ruined our hardwood floors in the bathroom, dining room, and foyer. Our house has been a construction zone ever since! We also decided to replace our family room and my sewing room carpets with hardwoods so we had to clear out our entire first floor. My sewing room contents are scattered all over the house. No fun!! My dear husband set up my embroidery machine in his third floor office so I can work but for each new project I have to search the house for just the right supplies. It's chaos but we're making it work somehow.

Christmas Hair Pretties and a Fun Idea!

Oh, the cuteness! I think my new Snowman Hair Pretties design is my favorite one yet! With flirty eyelashes and ric rac arms, this little snowman will melt your heart! I left room on the snowman's belly so a name can be added with your software for a sweet little extra touch! Snowman Hair Pretties are Introductory Priced at only $4! (Look for our matching applique pattern coming soon!)

There are so many fun things you can do with this design. For one, how about stitching a ribbon loop into the top of the Snowman Hair Pretty to make a Christmas ornament?! That's exactly what I did in the photo below (but my Christmas tree is still boxed up in my attic for another few weeks so I tied it onto a gift instead!) I found this sweet red gift bag at a Hallmark store. It had red grosgrain ribbon handles and a little red ribbon loop for hanging a tag - perfect! I threaded a piece of red grosgrain ribbon through the bag's ribbon loop, then threaded on my Snowman and tied the ribbon in a bow. Voila! Notice I added a name to the ornament during the stitching so I have a gift tag as well as an ornament!

I also wrapped a jar with festive tissue paper then tied it with a red grosgrain ribbon, laced with the Snowman Hair Pretties ornament.

Hair Pretties Halloween Treat Bags

Turn simple Halloween Treat Bags into spectacular gifts! I used Spooky Spider Hair Pretties designs to transform these boring bags into fun ones that any kid would flip for! I simply tied each treat bag with a ribbon. I made one spider into a hair clip for my daughter, then clipped it onto the ribbon. I made the other spider into a pin for my son and pinned it onto the ribbon. Super fun and super easy! I have to mention that when I set these bags up to photograph, my phone rang. I walked away to answer it and when I returned 10 minutes later, the bags were torn apart and the candy inside was missing. My two small children were nowhere in sight and the house was eerily quiet... I guess the treat bags were just irresistible!

New Hair Pretties design!

I love candy corn! When I went to photograph my new Candy Corn Hair Pretties design today on the purple felt background, I thought it would look cute with real candy corn surrounding it. And, of course, I have a big bag of candy corn on hand for, um, such needs as this. After scattering them around the hair pretty, I thought it would be a shame to put them back in the bag, so I gobbled them up. (That was a hint for another Hair Pretties design I'm working on...) I hope you enjoy this design as much as I enjoyed the real candy corn!! (Did I mention that it's on sale for half price?!)

Hair Pretties Backpack and Lunch Box Tag

Here's another fun way to use our Hair Pretties designs! I made a quick tag for my daughter's lunch box with our Posy Hair Pretties design. To make the lunch box tag, I simply taped a folded ribbon to the stabilizer after the Posy placement line was stitched, and before I placed the felt on the placement line. After the Posy Hair Pretties design was completed, I threaded a key ring through the loop and had a sweet little tag ready to go!

More Hair Pretties Ideas!

Check out these fun Zipper Pulls made with our Hair Pretties designs! This is a great way to use our Hair Pretties designs for both boys and girls!!

I used the Pumpkin Hair Pretties design to make a fun zipper pull on an orange jacket. I purchased the hardware for the zipper pull on Etsy. You can also find similar findings at craft stores in the jewelry making section. It's easy to remove the zipper pull when the jacket is ready for a wash. To make a zipper pull with hardware, sew the first placement stitch of the Hair Pretties design onto your stabilizer. Take a piece of ribbon and insert the hardware. Fold the ribbon in half, then tape it down to the stabilizer, making sure the ends of the ribbon extend over the placement line, toward the center of the design. Tape the ribbon and hardware down to the stabilizer, then follow the stitching directions for the rest of the Hair Pretties design.

Here's another zipper pull which I made with our Cupcake Hair Pretties design. I simply sewed a length of ribbon into the top of the Cupcake Hair Pretties design by hand, inserted it into the zipper, then tacked the end of the ribbon to the back of the cupcake. I could also have simply sewn two lengths of ribbon into the cupcake then tied it onto the zipper. In hindsight, that's a much better method!

Whichever method you choose, you're sure to love the results! Zipper pulls made with our Hair Pretties designs are a great way to dress up a plain jacket and they're quick to change so you can have a new one for all occasions!

I have the most creative customers! I offer them my simple Hair Pretties designs and look what they can do with them....

Rhea from North Carolina has been one busy little bee! Check out her creations...

She used our Spooky Spider Hair Pretties design and turned it into 3 different fun creations! She cut 2 slits in the back of the spider and slipped it over the strap on her shoe for a really fun little shoe decoration!

Next, she took the Spooky Spider Hair Pretties design and slipped grosgrain ribbon through 2 slits on the back of the spider. She attached Velcro dots on the ribbon ends then secured the ribbon around a napkin to make a napkin ring! I love this idea and so will my kids when I make them a set!

And, as if that wasn't enough creativity for one day, Rhea used the Spooky Spider Hair Pretties design to make a bracelet using grosgrain ribbon and Velcro! Very cute idea!!

Rhea also used our Posy Hair Pretties design to personalize a pair of gloves. What a cute holiday gift idea! She stitched the Posies on felt in-the-hoop, then stitched them to the gloves by hand.

Rhea also made this adorable hat with our Annie Owl Hair Pretties design. SO cute! She tacked the owl down by hand. You could also stitch some Velcro to the hat and the back of a variety of Hair Pretties designs so you can change out the design to match your outfit or holiday. What a fun little gift set that would make!

Rhea made this perfect bag for fall with our Pumpkin Hair Pretties designs. She cut a fence out of felt and stitched it to the bag, then adorned it with a bunch of little Pumpkin Hair Pretties! How fun!

Not to be left out, Rhea used our Bird Hair Pretties designs on this cute Minky pillow. She cut a tree out of felt, stitched it to the pillow, and surrounded it with adorable little Bird Hair Pretties which she quickly stitched down. Any little girl would adore this sweet pillow!

Rhea from North Carolina used our new Apple Hair Pretties design to make an adorable bookmark! During the stitching process, she inserted 7/8" grosgrain ribbon into the tops of two apples to create her bookmark. What a fun idea! These would make quick and easy teacher gifts!

Courtney from Louisiana used our Spooky Spider Hair Pretty on a pretty orange hair bow to make it simply adorable!

Nicole from Alabama used our Posy Hair Pretties on top of pretty hair bows and they turned out beautifully! Instead of using felt, Nicole used fabric and cut it with pinking shears. How creative! (She used felt on the back of the Posy Hair Pretties to give them body.)
